Resumen:
Argentina arid lands comprise about 108 million hectares, i.e. 39% of the continental land area of the country. The environmental characteristic diversity is derived from the vast latitudinal extension of the area. Provision of drinking water for livestock is generally inadequate. Vegetation shows some form of degradation by overgrazing and wood collection. About 59% of sheep, 52% of goats and 96% of llamas (Lama glama), vicuñas (Vicugna vicugna) and alpacas (Lama pacos) existing in the country are in the arid zone. Density of domestic livestock and fauna is 2.4 AU km-2. Cow-calf operation, goats for meat production and sheep for wool production are the dominant production systems. Calf crop is 47%, kid crop and lamb crop ranges from 80 to 160% and from 40 to 80%, respectively. Fauna species compete for food and water with domestic livestock and some health problems are common to them.
