Resumen:
Heavy cattle pressure during early post-fire regeneration in burned areas, may locally impede the regeneration of some woody species, mainly those which only reproduce by seed or do not have fire reproductive adaptations, like Nothofagus dombeyi and Austrocedrus chilensis. In this work we present results, based on 4 year measurements using experimental exclosures, which analyze the potential role of cattle in the process of conversion of forest to shrubland. Tree regeneration was monitored inside and outside the exclosures in a N. dombeyi and A. chilensis mixed forest, burned in 1999 (near Lago Espejo). During four consecutive years (2002-2005), cover, height and number of individuals of both main tree species were measured. Saplings under livestockpressure of both species showed significantly less height and higher cover percentage than those inside fenced plots. In 2005 heights of N. dombeyi and A. chilensis inside the exclosures were, respectively, a 40% and a 50% higher than in plots affected by cattle. Number of saplings of both species tended to decrease outside exclosures from 2004 to 2005, and increase (N. dombeyi) or lightly decrease (A. chilensis) in plots unaffected by cattle. The experimental results predict that, in a short time, cattle will inhibit the regeneration of both main tree species, impeding forest regeneration and instead resulting in a bamboo shrubland (of Chusquea culeou), with few shrubs species.
