Resumen:
During the fieldtrip we will examine essentially late Miocene to Holocene continental trace fossils, although the first day we will also see late Miocene marine trace fossils. The first part of the trip will be concentrated on the Miocene-Pliocene Río Negro Formation, which is an ichnological paradise. The formation is superby exposed at the seacliffs for several tens of kilometers and the variety and abundance of trace fossils is amazing. The first stops will be devoted to marine facies and trace fossils of the middle member of the unit. Then we will move to see continental trace fossil at stops located close to the lighthouse (faro in Spanish), near El Cóndor town (Río Negro province). The second day we will visit the type locality of Megatherichnum oportoi, the bipedal trackway of a large ground sloth in the exposures located at the margin of the Río Negro near Carmen de Patagones (Buenos Aires province). Then we will travel north to Punta Alta to visit the Museo Municipal ?Carlos Darwin?, where we will revise casts of the main ichnotaxa of the late Pleistocene Paleoicnological site of Pehuén-Co, to be visited next day. On the third day, we will visit the Monte Hermoso 1 archeological site to see Holocene human and other animal footprints; and then travel to Pehuén-Co to observe the abundant late Pleistocene mammal and bird ichnofauna preserved at the sea coast (Buenos Aires province).
