Yeasts are unicellular fungi present in aquatic environments and able to synthesize photoprotective compounds (PPC): carotenoids pigments (antioxidants) and mycosporines (UV-sunscreens). Yeast occurrence in 14 Northwestern-patagonian water systems was studied. Oligothrophic waters bear yeast counts ranging from 10 to 250 cells L-1. However, higher values could be also found. Carotenoid-producing yeast strains outnumbered non-pigmented in waters of high transparency or high altitude lakes (specially with both attributes). Mycosporine production was a species related character that appeared to be poorly distributed in pigmented species but frequent in non-pigmented ones. The relationship between yeast PPC synthesis and aquatic environment origin is discussed.
