Resumen:
Stylosanthes (Papilionoideae, Fabaceae) is a tropical and subtropical genus with ~48 species that include important forage species. Twenty three taxa were described to South America, eleven of them are diploid (2n = 2x = 20), eight are tetraploid (2n = 4x = 40) and the remaining species are unknown. In order to provide cytogenetic information, we present chromosome counts of four and eight populations of S. guianensis and S. hipocamppoides, respectively, belonging to northeastern Argentina. Chromosome numbers detected in this study 2n = 2x = 20 confirms data previously reported for S. hippocampoides and for S. guianensis from Brazil populations. For the first time, we report chromosome data for these species from Argentina. These data contribute to the characterization of natural populations of forage Stylosanthes species from northeastern Argentina.
