Resumen:
Chagas disease affects over ten million individuals in Latin America and a figure increasing by thousands in developed countries (WHO 2012). In spite of being classified as a ?neglected tropical disease? ?and lackingof safe treatment?, Chagas biomedical research captures substantial funding from developing and developed regions. In this paper we map knowledge production from several sources, including 40,000 papers from WoS and SCIELO databases, tens of European projects and several interviews to Latinamerican leaders of those projects, in order to understand how scientific knowledge is shaping (or co-producing) the disease and defining possible modes of addressing the problem while disregarding others.Scientific knowledge has played a crucial role in defining Chagas both as a public and as a scientific problem. From the 70?s on, knowledge production has yielded primarily from molecular biology on its etiological agent (T. cruzi), and received increasing support from global funding agencies, including it genome sequencing its. While holding a strong rhetoric of addressing a social issue, Chagas research represents a clear case of Applicable Knowledge Not-Applied: it meets international standards of excellence and visibility, but fails to address the social needs it was supposed to attend (Kreimer & Zabala 2007). Based on a framework that examines international scientific networks, funding structures, scientific production and its effects on local research agendas, we systematize a methodology that expands the evidence base and allows us to link information, so far, it has not been analyzed jointly. We will be able to show the main, sub-disciplines, approaches, and networks that dominate Chagas research and help in co-producing the disease as a ?universal? (or ?purified?) scientific problem.
