Resumen:
Pyromorphite from the Capillitas District (Catamarca). Pyromorphite has been found as analteration product of galena, associated with cerussite and linarite, at the Santa Rita Mine (La Argentina vein). It also occurs as a post-mining product, in stalactites hanging from the gallery roof of the same mine, and in dumps from the La Rosario vein. At Santa Rita the mineral is found in an alteration zone surrounding sulfides in rhodochrosite and quartz matrix. In the other occurrences, it forms loose crystals. Pyromorphite occurs as long prismatic crystals showing {1010} and a steep bipyramid, reaching 124 m long. Electron microprobe analyses show partial substitution of Pb by Ca (up to 3.32 wt.% CaO), and minor amounts of Mn, Fe and Zn. Elements in tetrahedral coordination other than P are present in negligible amounts. Most Pb in secondary minerals at Capillitas District is derived from galena. The P source is probably linked to apatite or potassic feldspar. Bacteria probably played an important role in pyromorphite precipitacion in certain environments.
