This study deals with the synthesis of ferrogels based on gelatin and magnetic nanoparticles. Three methodologies were explored: i-by in situ co-precipitation of magnetite nanoparticles on pre-formed hydrogel; ii- by the incorporation of preformed magnetite nanoparticles into the precursors of hydrogel, and iii-from the precursors of both hydrogel and iron oxide. Crosslinking/stabilizers agents were added to gelatin network. Dextrose and gum Arabic were selected, exploring different ratios with respect to gelatin. The hydro and ferrogels were characterized by FTIR and thermogravimetric analysis.Independently of the synthetic route hybrid materials with magnetic properties were obtained. The main differences were detected in mechanical and swelling behavior of materials arising from methodologies i and ii. In both cases structural changes in the gelatin network were evidenced by the incorporation of iron oxide moieties. The performance of these materials as adsorbents of heavy metals was examined in batch as preliminary application in environmental remediation.
