Resumen:
Abstract Nanosized magnetite has emerged as anadsorbent of pollutants in water remediation. Nanoadsorbentsinclude magnetic iron oxide and its modifiers/stabilizers, such as carbon, silica, clay, organic moieties(polymers, aminoacids, and fatty acids) and other inorganicoxides. This review is focused on the recentdevelopments on the synthesis and use of magneticnanoparticles and nanocomposites in the treatment ofcontaminated water. The emphasis is on the influence ofthe iron oxide modifiers on some properties of interest suchas size, BET area, and magnetization. The characteristics ofthese nanomaterials are related to their ability to eliminateheavy metal ions and dyes from wastewater. Comparativeanalysis of the actual literature was performed aiming topresent the magnetic material, its preparation methodologyand performance in the elimination of the selectedpollutants. Vast information has been properly summarizedaccording to the materials, their properties and preferentialaffinity for selected contaminants. The mechanismsgoverning nanomaterial?s formation as well as theinteractions with heavy metals and dyes have beencarefully analyzed and associated to their efficiency
