Resumen:
Age-related reference intervals (RIs) of carotid artery intima-media thickness (CIMT) obtained from largehealthy population are still lacking in Southern Cone of Latin America. The aim of this study was todetermine CIMT RIs in a cohort of 1012 healthy children, adolescents and adults from Argentina. Weevaluated if RIs for males and females and for left and right carotids were necessary. Second, mean andstandard deviation (SD) age-related equations were obtained for left, right and average ((left+right)/2) CIMT(L-CIMT, R-CIMT, A-CIMT, respectively) using parametric regression methods based on fractionalpolynomials, in order to obtain age-specific percentiles curves. Using the standard normal distribution age-specific percentile curves were obtained. After adjusting for differences males showed higher A-CIMT(0.577±0.003 mm vs 0.566±0.004 mm, p=0.039) in comparison with females. Specific RIs for males andfemales and for right and lefts carotid artery were necessary. For males, the equations were: A-CIMT Mean=0.42+8.14x10 -5 *Age 2 ; A-CIMT SD=5.9x10 -2 +1.09x10 -5*Age 2 .For females, were: A-CIMT Mean=0.40+8.20x10 -5 *Age 2 , A-CIMT SD=4.67x0 -2 +1.63x10 -5 *Age 2 .Our study provides the largest database to date concerning RIs of CIMT in healthy people in Argentina.Specific RIs and percentiles of CIMT for children, adolescents and adults are now available according to ageand gender, for right and lefts common carotid arteries.
