Medicinal plant knowledge in a context of cultural pluralism: a case study in Northeastern Brazil

Ethnopharmacological relevance: The studyofplantuseincontextsofmigrationscangiveimportantinsights toculturalevolution,sincepeoplefacerapidchangesintheirenvironmentsandoftenstartinteractingwithnativedwellers,bothconstitutingforcesthatcanleadtochange.Therefore,thisstudyfocused onmedicinalplantknowledgeandtransmissioninordertounderstandwhathappenstosuchknowledgewhenpeoplefromseveralregionsconvergetoasingleplacealreadyinhabitedbynativepeople.Methods: The studywascarriedoutintheruralcommunityofCaeté-Açu(knownasCapãoValley),placed inthestateofBahia(NEBrazil).Nativeandmigrantpeople'sknowledgeonmedicinalplanswasaccessed withafreelisting.Peoplewerealsoaskedaboutwhominthecommunityoncetaughtthemabout medicinalplants.Fourgroups(native,regionalmigrants,nationalmigrantsandinternationalmigrants) werecomparedintermsofnumberofcitedplants,plantrepertoiresandknowledgetrans-mission. Foreachgroupwealsoransimpleregressionsbetweenageandnumberofcitedplantsandresidence timeandnumberofcitedplants.Results anddiscussion: Wefoundnodifferencesamonggroupsintermsofnumberofknownspecies.However,plantrepertoiresdifferinsomeextentamonggroups.Whilemigrantsclaimtohavelearntwithboth nativepeopleandothermigrants,mostnativeclaimtohavelearnedmainlywithothernatives.Ageinfluences plantknowledgeonlyforthenatives,whatstrengthensevidencethatthisgroup'sknowledgeis basedonexperiencewhilemigrants'? knowledgeisbasedonanactivesearch.Residencetimeinthecommunity didnotinfluence migrants? knowledge.Conclusion: Nativeandmigrantpeoplehavedifferencesintheirwaysofacquiringmedicinalplantknowledgeandlesspopularspeciesarealsodifferentbetweengroups.However,wecanobserveatendency offusionandindissolubilityofmigrantandnativeknowledgesincethenewgenerationsareincontact withbothsources.
