Resumen:
This book can bethought as a ?pilgrimage? aimed at understanding the development of science inLatin America. The idea of a pilgrimage nicely sums up the search for differentways to tackle the issue of science in its different aspects, facets, demonstrations, processes, and consequences. Given that scientific knowledge isa complex, multiple object grappling with the natural world, which it seeks toexplain, and with the social world that permeates it and which it alsotransforms, our strategies to study it and try to explain it tend also to bemany and varied. However, my journey is certainly different from otherstudies conducted in developed countries: my target was always oriented toLatin America and, as I discuss in this chapter, there is a great differencebetween analyzing ?mainstream? science and peripheral science. Is ?peripheral modernity? an oxymoron? My answer would?May be. May be not?. I was fascinated by this apparent rampant contradictionbetween modernity and periphery. A certain ambition embedded in a habitus ofsociety (a particular feature of Buenos Aires, but one probably extendable toseveral other cities): that of ?being in fashion?, of following the trendsdeemed novel in the broad cosmopolitan space, makes the study of the emergenceof new scientific fields in Argentina a particularly interesting space ofobservation.
