Resumen:
By the late ‘50s, the creation of Public Research Centers (PRC) in Argentina was a part of a strategy for ‘mobilizing science for development’. They have been organized in a sector-oriented basis: industry, agriculture, nuclear energy. In parallel, the National research Council (CONICET) was created, following the model of the ‘Realm of Science’.The PRC have been marked –since their origins- by a crucial tension: on e the one hand, the production of original knowledge (whose dynamics belongs to the autonomy proper to academia). On the other hand, the use of knowledge had to be oriented to intervene in several social and economic problems (where the effectiveness depends on the application by other actors and contexts. Thus, the internal government of PRC is a crucial topic to understand the tension among/between production and use of knowledge. To improve our knowledge, we need to distinguish: a) Autonomy degree regarding each bureaucratic sector (Ministry, Secretary, etc)Autonomy degree inside each PRC (researchers’ capacity to establish their own research agendas); and b) Autonomy degree regarding ‘social demands’
