To understand the dynamics of Chagas disease and the possibilities of scientific research to modify it, we pay attention to the social and institutional structure. This is the frame where its transmission/contagion, forms of diagnosis and treatment take place. We consider that the possibilitiy of using scientific knowledge to improve life conditions of affected people does not depend only on the kind and amount of produced knowledge. It also depends on a particular social articulation of various political, institutional, cultural and environmental factors, which help or make difficult its effective use.
