Resumen:
Besides anthropogenic factors, water, nutrients, herbivores, and fire are the main factorsaffecting savanna structure and functioning (Scholtz et al. 2014; Chapter 1). The leastunderstood of these is that of herbivores on woody plants, although this has been gainingincreasing attention in recent years (Sankaran et al. 2013; Scholtz et al. 2014; Pringleet al. 2016). Understanding the array of individual plant responses to partial consumptionby herbivores is important because such responses determine changes in plantcommunities (Hester et al. 2006a; Hobbs 2006). Such changes depend on the relativeexpression of tolerance‐related vs defense‐related traits of plant species in a givencommunity (du Toit and Olff 2014). On one hand, selective browsing, especially bylarge mammals, leads to dominance by avoided species that express defensive traits, such as long spines or high concentrations of phenolic compounds (Pastor et al. 2006;Harrison and Bardgett 2008; Ford et al. 2014).
