Resumen:
The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between longitudinal (or primary) and secondary growth and the effects that climate has on these in a natural population of Nothofagus pumilio of northwestern Patagonia. Forty tree-ring and number of internodes chronologies were developed for Nothofagus pumilio along a temporal sequence of ten years in the tree line. There were significant correlations between primary and secondary growth, and climatic factors along the temporal sequence. Ring width and internodes number respond to climate variations both, before the elongation of the annual shoot, and simultaneously with the seasonal growth. Our results revealed that temperatures in winter and summer of the previous year largely regulate the growth of N. pumilio, while rainfalls have implications in the same year in which growth occurs.
