Resumen:
Sex hormone-binding globulin (Shbg) is a serum protein that transports sex steroids in the blood of all vertebrate with the exception of bird. Its function is to regulate the bioavailability and metabolic clearance of serum steroids. In teleost fishes, the main gene expression site is the liver while the Shbg protein distribution is wider. In pejerrey we studied the tissue distribution of Shbg by inmunohistochemistry in larvae at 8 week post-hatching and different adult pejerrey tissue. In larvae Shbg immunoreactivity (ir-Shbg) was detected in hepatopancreas, intestine, gills, particularly in red blood cells on central blood capillary of primary lamella, pseudobranch and tastes bud cells located at the epidermis. And in adult pejerrey, ir-Shbg was detected in hepatopancreas, principally within the pancreas, gills, mainly concentrated in endothelial cells and interlamela cells but not in red blood cells, intestine and gonads. In ovary we found a stronger ir-Shbg inside the oocyte, like dispersed drops, within the cortical alveoli as well as on corionic filament and in testes the principally ir-Shbg was mainly present surrounded the seminiferous lobules. The biological significance of this remains to be determined, but the distribution of Shbg in pejerrey tissue, mainly the ir-Shbg in tastes bud and red blood cells in larvae and within the oocyte in adult females, provide more evidence that Shbg has the capacity to act in extravascular compartments, extending its function beyond a carrier protein.
