Resumen:
The present study was aimed at analyzing alkalinity-induced changes in the primary leaf metabolome of the L. japonicus ecotypes Gifu B-129 and Miyakojima MG-20.The two ecotypes were evaluated under control (without salt) and alkaline (10 mM NaHCO3) conditions. Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis ofshoot extracts from both ecotypes was performed, along with measurements of growth, phosphorus and available iron concentrations.Alkalinity induced a higher detrimental effect in terms of chlorosis and survival inalkalinized Gifu B-129 plants, with respect to MG-20 ones. The analysis yielded 41different, quantificable metabolites, including aromatic organic acids (AOA), amino acids (AA), sugars and polyols. We have found some genotype-specific metabolites. At the same time, some metabolites were differentially affected by alkalinity in each genotype. We can conclude that the higher tolerance of MG-20 plants, compared with Gifu B-129 could be related, at least in part, to the differential accumulation of citric, citramalic, lactic and phosphoric acids, and other organic metabolites..0806
