Abstract Raphidiopsis mediterranea is a freshwatercyanobacterium that forms toxic blooms in eutrophicwater bodies. Factors controlling its proliferation havenot been explored in detail. We investigated R.mediterranea autecology by (i) analyzing its dynamicsin a hypertrophic shallow lake dominated by Planktothrixagardhii (Oscillatoriales) and its relationshipwith environmental factors; and (ii) studying the effectof light intensity and phosphate availability on R.mediterranea isolates growing in mono or in cocultureswith P. agardhii. The redundancy analysisdemonstrated that water temperature, light, and phosphateconcentrations were important driving factorsfor the seasonal succession of the two species.
