In Argentinaperiurbanstreamsfrequentlyreceiveagricultural,livestockandindustrialdischarges. Heavy metalshavebeenfoundinthewatercolumnandsedimentsofnumerouswaterbodiesofthe pampeanregion,atlevelsabovethelimitsestablishedforaquaticlifeprotection.Thisstudyaimedto evaluatetheeffectofacontaminantpulseofcadmiumdischargedintoawater-sedimentsystemof differentparticlesizes,bymeansoflaboratorytestsusingjuvenilesandadultsof Hyalellacurvispina, a native amphipod.Wefoundthatthesubstrateparticlesizewasadeterminingfactorinthetoxicityof cadmiumandthattheadultsof H. curvispina were moresensitivethanjuveniles.Wealsoobserveda temporaldifferencebetweenthetwoagesforthesametypeofsediment.Giventhenatureofthe sedimentsofregionalwaterbodies,itisexpectedthatadischargeofcadmium,evenatconcentrations as lowasthosetestedhere,willaffectthesurvivalofnativeamphipods.
