Phytoplankton structure and dynamic in a pampean shallow lake basin (San Miguel del Monte, Buenos Aires, Argentina).This study was carried out in San Miguel del Monte shallow lake. The samples were obtained monthly (September 1997 to August 1998) in the deeper zone of the lake, in the connection with Las Perdices shallow lake and in the principal affluent, El Totoral stream. The main purpose of the study was to analyse the effect of external disturbance on the phytoplankton structure and physico-chemical parameters, comparing their changes in Monte shallow lake, El Totoral stream and connection with Las Perdices shallow lake. In spring and late summer the highest density of phytoplankton was reached in the shallow lake and in the connection with Las Perdices shallow lake. In the stream physico-chemical parameters and phytoplankton abundance were markedly different comparatively with the shallow lake. The occurrence of indicators and exclusive species such Microcystis pseudofilamentosa, Spirulina abbreviata and Synechoccocus elongatus confirm the particular conditions of the stream. According to historical data, the shallow lake showed an increase of its eutrophication state. An exceptional rainfall and changes in water level were found as important external factors to determine the structure of shallow lake phytoplankton. We consider that some adaptation mechanisms and the complexity of algae assemblages permit phytoplankton maintain a certain resilience to changes of trophic state Microcystis pseudofilamentosa, Spirulina abbreviata and Synechoccocus elongatus confirm the particular conditions of the stream.
