Resumen:
This paper aims at identifying some challenges in reducing the morbi-mortality from sexually transmitted diseases among the elderly in the Southern Cone countries in the context of the post-2015 development agenda. Given the scarcity of morbidity data, mortality rates by sex, age group and specific causes are calculated and analysed for quinquenniums 1997-2001 and 2009-2013 based on information from the World Health Organization and the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs. Although there have been some progresses (death rates from cervical cancer have decreased; sexually transmitted infections and acute hepatitis B -both sexes- have decreased too), the results show an increase for both sexes in deaths rates due to Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Human Papillomavirus in males (associated to oropharyngeal, penile and anal cancers). This situation reveals the need to redouble efforts including actions for all people from a comprehensive perspective.
