Resumen:
A strain of Euglena gracilis was isolated from a highly polluted river and was grown axenically in our laboratory. Chromium is one of the most important pollutants in this river. Published work on the different strains of Euglena gracilis showed that this metal even in low concentrations affects these taxa. Taking into account the origin of our strain we wanted to compare its behavior with other published results. Bioassays were carried on cultures and the conditions followed EPA protocols. Different media were used: Buetow, pH 6 and Cramer & Myers pH 4. As a result of these assays we could observe that LC50 96 h (lethal concentration) was higher (20 mg/l) for our strain than that reported which was about 3 mg/l. This could indicate that our strain is more resistant to this metal and it could be related to its origin. Changes in its lipid composition and the production of malondialdehyde are also studied.
