Freshwater undercage collection systems: Effectiveness and economics

Southern South America, including Argentina and Chile, has seen a massive increase in the scale of freshwater aquaculture production since the late 1980s Many problems in relation with intensive fish farm have been highlighted over the years (waste production leading to eutrophication, effects on natural populations of fish, visual impact). The aims of this paper, as part of a larger project investigating strategies for reduction and reuse of wastes from aquaculture in this region, is to make an evaluation of the effectiveness of this passive waste collection unit in trials continuing at a cage farm site in the Andean-Patagonian region.
