Resumen:
The effects on water quality generated by intensive fish farming in floating cages were evaluated within the Alicura development area, in Patagonia. Study strategies for the diagnosis, follow-up and reduction of the corresponding impact were devised as from criteria and models commonly used in the fields of limnology and aquaculture, so that the activity may grow in harmony with the environment (higher fish production, lower deterioration of water quality). Tha highest impacts take place close to the production area: accumulation of OM and nutrients in the sediments; modification of the N/P ratio; quick re-dissolution and high bio-availability of the waste nutrients with increase of the algae mass and alterations of its specific composition. The reservoirs´ general trophic state (in terms of TP and chlorophyll) has not been affected because the Tw is high and the fish production still low. The carrying capacity of cultured fish is estimated in 2,500 tons so as not to exceed a mesotrophic state. The installation of waste collectors allows the extraction of the said waste with a 35 %- efficiency in terms of P, while the polluting load is reduced and fish production may be increased.
