Resumen:
The proper use of water resources are essential aspects for sustainable development. Las Conchitas stream islocated in the southern area of Metropolitan Buenos Aires (Municipalities of Florencio Varela and Berazategui) with 700.000 inhabitants. The area includes a Natural Park (Hudson), agriculture, industry and residential zones sending the stream into Rio de la Plata. In this preliminary study the ecotoxicity and the biota in surface water and sediments are reported. The toxicity in the water column and sediments ranged between 1 and 40 Toxicity Units (with the highest values in sediments). The relative distribution of metals both in water and sediments were: Zn>Cu>V>Pb=Ni>Cu>Cd and Cr>Zn>Pb>V>Cu>As>Ni>Cd>Hg respectively. From a biological point of view, changes in composition, density and sensibility to pollution of benthic, diatom, macroinvertebrates and fishes were reported. The correlation between the biota and the ecotoxicological data provides a panoramic view on the adverse effects due to the pollution in this stream basin. E
