Resumen:
Abstract: In spring 2001 phytoplankton samples were taken in twenty nine sites distributed along river-sea axis of the Río de la Plata. Structure, biomass, distribution patterns and life strategies were analysed. 224 taxa were identified, chlorophytes and cyanophytes dominated upstream in freshwater tidal zone and diatoms in the mixohaline zone accompanied by dinoflagelates. Mean density was 110 cell ml-1, the greatest biomass corresponded to diatoms (freshwater zone) and dinoflagellates (external sector of mixohaline zone). The filaments and chains were the most frequent forms in the phytoplankton; “R”-competitive strategy dominated upstream and “S” downstream. Diversity values ranged between 0.3 and 3.2 bits.ind.-1. The distribution of species was mainly related with salinity gradient and secondarily with light gradient.
