Resumen:
The present treatment investigates cladistics relationships among genera of the tribe Paniceae, Poaceae using morphological data. Sixty seven characters were scored across 110 taxa within the tribe which represent current and previous classification systems; tribe Isachneae was chosen as the outgroup for the analysis, following Brown (1977) and Kellogg and Campbell (1987). The analysis resulted in 20,345 equally parsimonious trees of 372 steps each, with a total of 58 clades resolved in the strict consensus; these clades were discussed, considering the characters supporting each clade. This analysis was confronted with early classification systems of the tribe, and discrepancies were observed between the results and the classification proposed by several authors. Also, we found that Panicum is a polyphyletic genus, and should be divided into several taxa, and other genera, such as Arthropogon and Streptostachys, are not monophyletic. The findings highlight the need for a broad scale phylogenetic analysis, including molecular evidence, of the Paniceae.
