Rational formulas for traces in zero-dimensional algebras

Let K be a field of characteristic zero, and S:=K[x_1,...,x_n]. If I is a zero-dimensionalideal in S and r a rational function whose denominator is not a zero divisor in S/I, we establish a rational expression for the trace of the multiplication map Times_r : S/I -> S/I  in terms of the generalized Chow form of I. In the case I is a complete intersection in the torus, we get numerator and denominator formulas for traces in terms of sparse resultants.
