This double issue of Méthod(e)s addresses a major issue for contemporary social science inAfrica and around the world. It is now well recognized that mainstream social science ismarked by great inequalities of resources, recognition and authority. The elite universitiesand research institutes of the global North ? Western Europe and North America ? hold acentral position of prestige and influence. The subject matter, methods and intellectualframing of their research and teaching of course reflect their own social experience andposition. But because of their global hegemony, research and teaching of social sciencein all other parts of the world are powerfully affected by the ideas, methods and practicescurrent in the North.
