Resumen:
Macro-and-microfossils,includingmolluscs,cirripeds,echinoids,foraminifersandostracodsarea significantcomponentofaPleistocenemarineunitlocatedalongthesoutherncoastoftheBeagleChannel,onNavarinoIsland,Chile.Thispaleontologicalrecordrepresentstherichestandmostdiversemacro-and-microassemblagerecoveredfromPleistocenesouthernSouthAmerica.Intotal,97taxawereidentified:34molluscs,57foraminifers,and6ostracods.Theycompriseamixtureofspecimensinhabitingshallowmarineenvironmentscharacterizedbystrongbottomcurrentsandbelongingtodifferent localcommunitiesassociatedwiththespatialheterogeneityinthisbasin.Thetaxonomiccompositionofthispaleofaunashowsremarkablesimilaritieswithpresent-dayfauna,indicatingthatboth groupsdevelopedundersimilarenvironmentalconditions.However,slightdifferentclimaticconditionsattheageofdepositioncannotberuledout.Aswell,anecosystemtransitiontowardsatrulymarine environmentwithhighnumberoftaxawasrecognized.Finally,a Hiatella-cirripedassemblagedeserves specialattentionsincethepolymorphicshelloffossilandliving Hiatella is usedasapaleo-environmentaltool.Inthisregard,thesmallsizeof Hiatella in thestudiedmarineunitisbestrelatedtoits modeoflifeasanestlerwithinemptytestsofbarnacles,whichapparentlyservedasmicroenvi-ronments forthisspecies.Nevertheless,moregeochemicaldataonlivingandfossil Hiatella shells fromthe BeagleChannelwillbenecessarytotestthesuitabilityofusingthisspeciestoevaluatepaleo-temperaturesandotherseawatervariationsduringtheQuaternary.
