Resumen:
Xanthones or 9H-xanthen-9-ones (dibenzo-γ-pirone) comprise an important class of oxygenated heterocycles whose role is well-known in Medicinal Chemistry. The biological activities of this class of compounds are associated with their tricyclic scaffold but vary depending on the nature and/or position of the different substituents which leads to great diversity of pharmacological activities. Cytostatic, antimycotic, cardiovascular, antitumour and anti-HIV activities were reported. Recently, xanthones isolated from Calophyllum membranaceum, revealed strong anti-inflammatory action and were found to act as selective cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitors. In this context, the aim of this work is to evaluate the interaction of Xanthones with lipid components of biological model membranes and how they would alter membrane properties. The present study was carried out by means of surface pressure-molecular area (Π?A) isotherms in DPPC monolayers and by FTIR/ATR spectroscopy in bilayers at different degrees of hydration.
