Resumen:
Identification of Algal Blooms in the North Patagonian Gulfs using ocean color remote sensing and field optical properties.The aim of this proposal is to identify algal blooms using ocean colour remote sensing and field optical data. Toxigenic species of microalgae have been recorded since 1980 in Northpatagonic gulfs and with this, HABs have become a socio-economic, environmental and public health problem. Time series of ocean colour satellite data (mainly from SeaWiFS, MODIS, VIIRS and OLCI sensors) helped us to know phytoplankton dynamics and their trends in relation to various environmental forcings. The determination of phenological indices derived from long time series will allow us to understand deeply the dynamics of phytoplankton and to detect changes associated with global change. The hyperspectral data from the OCI sensor (PACE mission) linked to optical and biological in situ data will provide insight into various aspects of the composition of the phytoplankton community, including harmful algal blooms. We are currently collecting field optical data in coastal waters to assess its quality, which is valuable for evaluating operational satellite products. Maps of phenological indices and characteristics of algal blooms will be transferred to government entities in order to contribute to strategies for marine conservation and sustainable use of resources in the study area.
