Sediments (~5 cm depth) were collected in 44 stations distributed inside the Gulf (Figs.1a and 1b; excluding the Marine Park), in the Park (zooms in Fig. 1b) and outside the Gulf (Fig. 1c). Collection was performed avoiding contact of samples with metal surfaces. They were stored at 4 C° until analysis in the ISMER, where they were characterized using X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) (major and some minor elements) and Inductively Coupled Plasma with quadrupole mass spectrometer detection and direct analysis of solid sample by laser ablation (LA-ICP-MS) (trace elements) (Leite et al., 2011). Different diagrams and ratios between elements were used to infer provenance and weathering/recycling processes.
