Resumen:
The present work shows an integration of events and ecological processes observed through 15 years of study (1994-2009) at Peninsula Valdes, Argentina. Different beaches in this peninsula are regularly used by shorebirds as places of stopover during their migratory movements. Among the species observed here are the Red Knot (Calidris canutus rufa), the White-rumped Sandpiper (Calidris fuscicollis) and the Two-banded Plover (Charadrius falklandicus). These shorebirds fed basically by catching invertebrates from intertidal communities, with two species of clams (Darina solenoides and Tellina petitiana) and two species of polychaetes (Travisia olens and Glycera americana) are the main prey that serve as trophic sustenance of them. A peculiarity of intertidal communities lies in their natural dynamics, given the particular biological cycle of each species and the significant influence of the environment on them. As expected, during such an extended period of study the changes have been many and the evolution of the intertidal community (trophic supply) had effects on the shorebird populations, which responded with different strategies according to each situation.
