Resumen:
Outbreaks of harmful algal blooms (HAB) have occurred in coastal waters of Chubut province (Patagonia, Argentina) since 1980 causing Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP), Diarrheic Shellfish Poisoning (DSP) and Amnesic Shellfish Poisoning (ASP). Both PSP and DSP events have been related with human health problems, including deaths, generating fishery closures and commercial losses. The objective of this proposal, based on the literature and the knowledge gained over more than 25 years of research, is to produce a guide for the identification of potentially harmful microalgae including information on their characteristics, geographic distribution, abundance, and environmental conditions in the coasts of this Province. The recipients of this guide are university teachers and students, aquacultures, fishermen, resource, administration and management agencies and health organizations. Data on harmful dinoflagellates (12 species), harmful diatoms (10 species) and harmful silicoflagellates (3 species), including those potentially toxic, will be presented during the meeting.
