Resumen:
This chapter includes advances on the design and evaluation of molecularbiological tools for the assessment of hydrocarbon-degrading potential in coastal environments of Patagonia. Culture-independent studies were used to identify functional biomarker genes associated with hydrocarbon biodegradation and to estimate their relative abundance in sediments and experimental systems. Metagenomic fragments containing multiple biomarker genes revealed the PAH-degrading capabilities of ecologically relevant uncultured microorganisms from Patagonia. A community-levelecological indicator based on high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA genes was designed and evaluated. Lastly, the perspectives for the use of these tools in coastal environments of the Patagonian region are discussed.
