Resumen:
In active packaging of food products like fruits, meat or snacks, plastic films with tailor-made diffusive properties are the most successful materials. The controlled gas passage through the film allows maintaining an appropriate atmosphere in order to enlarge the product life with appropriate organoleptic properties. Nowadays, adequate transport properties are achieved using either polymer films with different castings or multiphase materials. The last ones, mainly polymer blends and nanocomposites, become the challenge in this field because allows tailoring the final properties, varying relative phase concentrations, compatibilization, dispersion, distribution, relative morphology, etc. In this work, the use of plastic-based nanocomposites in active packaging is analyzed. An overview of the mechanism involved in the gas transport is presented. Also, the actual formulations of low cost and biodegradable matrices nanocomposites are discussed in terms of specific applications, processability and massive use.
