Resumen:
The paper evaluates the thermal behavior and the comfort conditions in the different 5 structures (opened and sealed surfaces, woodlots and meadows) that usually compose the urban 6 squares of Mendoza city. The main objective of this research is to propose combinations of 7 variables (vegetation, materials, green-sealed ratio, distribution of internal pathways and spaces, 8 among others) for an efficient design of squares. The current thermal performance and the 9 comfort degree were explored through measurements campaigns, both fixed and mobile, during 10 the summer season 2012-2013. The fixed measures were taken by a grid of T-HR sensors and 11 the mobile ones through weather stations registering global solar radiation, PAR, wind speed 12 and direction, air temperature, mean radiant temperature, pressure and relative humidity. On the 13 basis of the collected data the comfort degree of the spaces was calculated by the COMFA 14 method. Results indicate that two main variables regulated the thermal conditions of squares: 15 the green-sealed ratio and the combined effect of type of structure, its solar access and sky view 16 factor. Even if squares play a key role in the urban greening of dry cities, it is imperative to 17 focus on the different variables defining their design since correct design decisions can 18 guarantee and strengthen their environmental functions.
