It is
possible to accurately monitor low oxygen activities in gases with an oxygen
electrochemical pump and a gauge fabricated with good quality industrial ZrO//2
tubes under appropriate experimental conditions. Trial experiments were
performed on gaseous mixtures prepared by electrochemical pumping of oxygen in
argon by electrochemical reduction of pure carbon dioxide and by
electrochemical oxidation of pure hydrogen and argon-hydrogen mixtures. An
accuracy of 2% on the oxygen activity measurement can now be obtained over the
whole range of pressures investigated.
