Resumen:
The use of copper sulfate is common in the control of aquatic weeds in irrigation canals. Copper is a heavy metal that tends to accumulate in the soil. The aim of this study was to evaluate the possible accumulation of copper in irrigated soils which could cause phytotoxic levels. A greenhouse trial was carried out using representative plants of Lower Colorado River Valley area. They were cultivated and watered with a solution of copper sulfate to 1, 2.5, and 5 ppm concentration. A field trial with similar characteristics was also conducted. It was observed accumulation of copper in the first 3 cm of soil, reaching levels that could be toxic to the most sensitive crops.
