Resumen:
Nowadays, numerical strategies are frequently applied for solving viscous sloshing in tanks both in two and three spatial dimensions. Such analyses are mainly focused on estimating certain parameters, such as the free surface behavior or the forces exerted by the fluid on the walls of the tanks, requiring the solution of at least two inter-related problems: the fluid flow one, described by the Navier-Stokes equations, and the free surface one. In the present work, different numerical methods, both of finite elements and finite volumes methods, are applied for solving a viscous and incompressible free surface problem consisting in a three-dimensional sloshing case, where the movement is induced by an external harmonic excitation. Furthermore, diverse methodologies to follow the interface position, either by interface tracking or interface capturing approaches. The numerical results are compared with experimental measurements in terms of free surface displacements in four fixed points, as well as other parameters are also selected to analyze the performance of each method.
