Resumen:
Continuous intensification of conventional agricultural often leads to diminishing returns and may subsequently culminate in intensification traps, the drop of yields with further increases of inputs. Such counterintuitive outcomes are driven by negative impacts of conventional intensification on biodiversity and negative feed-backs on agricultural yield. We present here a conceptual framework that allows us to investigate the ecological processes that interlink land management, biodiversity and agricultural production and may trigger intensification traps. Our simulations reveal that the emergence of intensification traps was strongly dependent on key system characteristics such as pollinator dependency and spatial variation in agricultural productivity. Further, even in landscapes where intensification traps did not occur, small decreases by 5-10% in agricultural production could be transmitted to disproportionally larger gains in biodiversity. The ecological and environmental dynamics that underly intensification traps should therefore be important determinants of future land-use planning to improve the structuring of agricultural landscapes.
