Resumen:
Atlantic salt marshes. Abstract. An important proportion of the coasts of the American continent are salt marshes. The few scientific information available about the Argentinean salt marshes suggest that burrowing crabs could strongly affect the structure of this community. Crabs can change soil quality and structure, as well as the richness and abundance of the associated infauna. They can also dramatically reduce Spartina production by eating it. On the other hand, plants buffer crabs from physical stressful conditions in the high marsh, allowing them to populate that area. The ecological ínteractions between these organisms could change in space and time; however, the ecological processes that are driven the patterns of their spatial distribution are reasonably predictable. More studies are needed to improve the understanding of the ecology and evolution of this important environment in the SW Atlantic coasts.
