In an attempt to foster the use of one of the few theoretical proposals which manage to link translation theory and practice, this paper aims at highlighting the usefulness of Componential Analysis in translating lexical items via the process of Semic Verbalisation. The goal of this process is to configure a formal translation procedure which enables translators to consciously account for operative decisions. These decisions, partially due to the instability of semantics as a theoretical field, could otherwise hardly be supported or justified outside the realm of intuition. From a more global perspective, Semic Verbalisation may also be said to contribute to the professional and scholarly consolidation of the practicing translator.
