An incipient body of research in experimental psychology has assessed the impact of translation and interpreting expertise on cognitive function. The present lecture proposes a critical overview of available studies. Though not entirely consistent, the evidence suggests that interpreting expertise enhances aspects of semantic processing, working memory, and cognitive flexibility. Also, psycholinguistic experiments show that the acquisition of translation competence significantly strengthens lexical networks during the early stages of training but not afterwards. While this line of research does not yet warrant any definitive conclusions, it opens promising avenues for both basic and applied research within translation and interpreting studies.
