Resumen:
Anatomy and development of the staminate flower, microsporogenesis and microgametogenesis of species of Lophophytum (Balanophoraceae) in Argentina. The anatomy and development of the staminate flowers, microsporogénesis and microgametogénesis of Lophophytum leandrii and Lophophytum mirabile subsp. bolivianum, were studied. The aim of this work was to provide data for knowledge and taxonomy of the genus. The staminate flowers differ in number and position of parts of the perianth and the form of the anthers, which are important characteristics in the taxonomy of the genus. The perianth parts are formed by parenchyma covered by a single-layered epidermis. The anther wall consists of epidermis, endothecium multilayered (with dual origin), middle layer and single-layered secretory tapetum (with dual origin). The microspore tetrads are tetrahedral; the pollen grains are tricolpate, sincolpate with thin exine. Pollen grains are shed at two-celled state. The reductions that characterize the tuber also occur in male flowers, which present “perianth pieces”, which lack the typical structure of sepals or petals. Although these holoparasitic are characterized by aberrant vegetative body, devoid of the typical organs or meristems, the microgametogenesis and microsporogenesis develop normally.
