Resumen:
To date five hypotheses have been proposed to explain variation in extra-pair paternity in birds. One of these, originally proposed by Stutchbury and Morton (1995), suggests that high breeding synchrony might lead to high extra-pair paternity rates, because females will be better able to compare the quality of potential mating partners, facilitating extra-pair copulations. Since then, this hypothesis has generated a great deal of debate in the behavioral and ornithological community. The aim of this research is to test whether breeding synchrony can explain variation in paternity rates both within and between three species of Tachycineta swallows (T. bicolor, T. albilinea and T. leucorrhoa) that range in distribution from high North to high South latitudes. For each female I have calculated a breeding-synchrony index (Marsden and Evans 2004). I analyze the relationship between extra-pair paternity rates and the synchrony index both within and among the three species of swallows. At the same time I present preliminary experimental data on changes in paternity levels between first and second clutches of females T. bicolor for which I have altered their breeding synchrony.
