Resumen:
Drought is the most important limiting factor for Ilex paraguariensis (yerba mate) crop production since plants are frequently exposed to water deficit during the spring or summer season, which leads with the leaf abscission and yield reduction. One of the main goals of the breeding program applied to yerba mate is to develop cultivars with increased tolerance to water deficit. To contribute to this objective, in a previous work we characterized a cultivar with the best physiological performance under drought stress. Here, in order to identify the molecular mechanisms underlying these phenotype traits, we use RNA-seq and bioinformatics to study the expression changes triggered by water deficit in leaves. Additionally, the key metabolites of main metabolic pathways were determined and by mean of gas chromatography?mass spectrometry and enzymatic activity to analyse the merged data from a broader point of view. We will discuss the plant response to drought through the analysis of the modulated metabolic pathways by inferring from the differential expression of genes and the variation in the metabolites content.
