The thermal transformations of kaolinite in kaolin clays include dehydroxylation to Metakaolin (MK) at around 600 °C, followed by the transformation to a low crystallinity phase: a silico-aluminate spinel (SAS) at around 980 °C. Finally mullite (M) is formed at temperatures between 1220 and 1300 °C. In this work we use Al K-edge XANES as a probe to study the aluminum local environment to establish the possible mediators of phase transformations including phases with low crystallinity non-detected by other techniques.
